Sloughi

By James C. • Updated

The Sloughi is a smooth-coated North African sighthound, often called the Arabian Greyhound, bred by Berber and Bedouin peoples to hunt hare, gazelle and jackal across desert country. It is lean, elegant and fast, loyal and affectionate with its own family but aloof with strangers. Dogs stand 66 to 72 cm and bitches 61 to 68 cm under the Dogs Australia standard, and the breed typically lives 12 to 15 years. It is recognised in the Hound group, but it is one of the rarest breeds in Australia, with a single breeder listed nationally and no puppies advertised.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a calm adult family, yes. Sloughis are loyal and affectionate with their own people but aloof with strangers and sensitive to noise and rough play. They suit quiet homes with older children, secure fencing and no small pets, rather than busy households with toddlers.
No Australian price is published because puppies are almost never available here. On 17 October 2026 Dogz Online listed one breeder and no puppies. Importing is usually necessary, and quarantine fees, permits and flights can exceed the purchase price itself.
Sloughi is commonly pronounced SLOO-ghee, with the stress on the first syllable, as given by Dogs Victoria. The name comes from North Africa, and the breed is also known in English as the Arabian Greyhound or Moroccan Greyhound.
Under the Dogs Australia standard, dogs stand 66 to 72 cm at the shoulder and bitches 61 to 68 cm. Commonly published weights are 22 to 28 kg for dogs and 18 to 24 kg for bitches, giving a tall, very lean sighthound.
Both are desert sighthounds, but the Sloughi always has a short, smooth coat with no feathering, while most Salukis have silky feathering on the ears, legs and tail. The Sloughi also tends to have a sturdier head and comes in sand to red colours.
Rarely. The breed is recognised by Dogs Australia, but in October 2026 only one breeder was listed nationally and no dogs were advertised. Expect a long wait or an import with at least 10 days of quarantine.
