What Queensland law requires from a seller
In Queensland, a dog born on or after 26 May 2017 cannot be given away, supplied, sold or advertised without a supply number that identifies its breeder, and the number must be quoted in the ad.
This applies even to a single litter, an unplanned litter, or puppies bred only for family and friends. A breeder whose dog has a litter must have a supply number within 28 days of the birth.
A supply number can be a breeder identification number from the Queensland Dog Breeder Register, a breeder exemption number, an accreditation number from an approved entity, or a number identifying a recognised interstate breeder. Members of Dogs Queensland, and breeders permitted or registered with Gold Coast City Council, Logan City Council or the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission, can use that membership, permit or licence number.
Someone selling or giving away a dog they did not breed, who does not run a business that supplies dogs, can apply for a breeder exemption number, which must then be used for that dog. Pounds and shelters, including rescue groups, that rehome dogs born on or after 26 May 2017 need a breeder identification number.
Primary producers who breed working dogs to be kept as working dogs by a primary producer do not need a supply number.
When you buy, the seller must give you a completed and signed change of ownership form, or an equivalent notice, recording the seller's name and the dog's supply number.
As a buyer, check the supply number on the online Queensland Dog Breeder Register to confirm it is valid and identifies the breeder.

Check the listing shows a supply number, ask to meet the mother, and ask to see the puppy in the home where it was raised. Request vaccination and worming records, and never pay a deposit before speaking to the breeder directly.
What is a supply number and how do I check one in Queensland?
A supply number identifies the breeder of a dog, or provides an exemption. It can be a breeder identification number from the Queensland Dog Breeder Register, a breeder exemption number, an accreditation number from an approved entity, or a recognised interstate breeder number. It must be quoted to give away, sell or advertise a dog born on or after 26 May 2017, and you can check it on the online Queensland Dog Breeder Register.
Which puppy breeds are most listed in Queensland right now?
Right now the most listed breeds in Queensland are dachshunds, german shepherds and groodles.
Can I buy a puppy in Queensland and have it transported to me?
Some breeders arrange regional or interstate transport, usually at the buyer's cost, so ask before you commit. Seeing the puppy and its mother in person first is still the safest way to buy, even when transport is offered.
Do puppy prices vary across Queensland?
Yes, and by more than most buyers expect. The same breed can list at very different prices depending on pedigree, health testing and how in demand the litter is. Compare several listings for your breed before deciding what a fair price looks like.
