What ACT law requires from a seller
In the ACT, an ad to sell or rehome a dog of any age must include the seller's breeding licence number if they are a licensed breeder. Otherwise it must include the dog's microchip number and an identifier for the seller: an ABN, a state or territory rehoming identifier, or the seller's name.
These rules apply to all sellers, even when a dog is given away for free, and to every kind of ad: trading websites, social media and online messaging, newspapers, flyers and posters.
An ACT seller selling to someone in NSW or another jurisdiction must still follow the ACT requirements. The seller must also give the new keeper identifying information so they can update the dog's microchip and registration.
Licensed breeders must meet the ACT breeding standards, which set the age at which a dog can be bred, the number of litters it can have and how often it can be bred. Puppy farms have been illegal in the ACT since 2015.

What should I check before buying a puppy in the ACT?
Check the listing shows a breeding licence number, or a microchip number and the seller's ABN, rehoming identifier or name, ask to meet the mother, and ask to see the puppy in the home where it was raised. Request vaccination and worming records, and never pay a deposit before speaking to the breeder directly.
What should an ACT puppy ad include?
If the seller is a licensed breeder, their breeding licence number. Otherwise, the dog's microchip number and an identifier for the seller: an ABN, a state or territory rehoming identifier, or the seller's name. Some breeders arrange regional or interstate transport, usually at the buyer's cost, so ask before you commit. Seeing the puppy and its mother in person first is still the safest way to buy, even when transport is offered.
Do puppy prices vary across the ACT?
Yes, and by more than most buyers expect. The same breed can list at very different prices depending on pedigree, health testing and how in demand the litter is. Compare several listings for your breed before deciding what a fair price looks like.
