What South Australian law requires from a seller
In South Australia, anyone selling a dog they have bred must apply to register as a breeder in Dogs and Cats Online (DACO), the state database for dog, cat and breeder registrations. This includes rescue groups and owners of an accidental litter.
Every ad to sell a dog must include the name, phone number and DACO breeder number of each breeder and each person involved in the sale.
Puppies must be microchipped before they are sold, with the microchip recorded in Dogs and Cats Online. When a puppy is sold, the breeder transfers the microchip number to the buyer through DACO.
The seller must also give you the following in writing:
- the names, phone numbers and DACO breeder numbers of everyone involved in breeding and selling the dog
- vaccination details, and any known illnesses or medical conditions
- if the dog is desexed, the name and address of the vet and the date of the procedure
- the microchip number, the date it was implanted, any national registries holding it, and the name and address of the implanter
- any control order on the dog
- any vet exemption from microchipping or desexing
