What Tasmanian law requires from a seller
In Tasmania, an ad offering a puppy for sale or rehoming must give the puppy's microchip number or its mother's, or, if neither is microchipped, the mother's council registration number and the name of her council.
This comes from the Animal Welfare (Dogs) Regulations 2026, which replaced the 2016 regulations and took effect when notified in the Gazette on 19 August 2026. Under them a puppy is a dog under 12 months old, and an ad without these details carries a fine of up to 20 penalty units.
When a dog is sold or rehomed, the seller must give the new owner a vaccination certificate issued and signed by a vet, showing the date of the last vaccination, the diseases vaccinated against and when each is next due, and must tell the new owner when a vet last checked the dog's general health.
A seller who knows or suspects that a dog has an injury, sickness, disease, physical impairment, pregnancy, aggression or behavioural problems must not rehome it unless they have first told the new owner about each one and why they know or suspect it, and have made reasonable enquiries that the new owner can care for the dog.
A puppy must not be rehomed before 8 weeks of age, except on a vet's advice for that puppy. Before it is handed over, the seller must also give the new owner the same microchip or registration details the ad has to show.

Check the listing shows a microchip number for the puppy or its mother, or the mother's council registration, ask to meet the mother, and ask to see the puppy in the home where it was raised. Request vaccination and worming records, and never pay a deposit before speaking to the breeder directly.
