Registering your puppy with Brisbane City Council
Every dog living in the Brisbane City Council area must be registered with the council before it turns three months old, or within 14 days of moving to Brisbane.
A registration lasts 12 months. What you pay depends on whether the dog is desexed, where you got it and whether you hold a concession: the fees are lower for a desexed dog, and pensioners get 50 per cent off the listed fees. You can register online, at a Customer Centre or an animal rehoming centre, or by post, and you will need the puppy's microchip number.
Microchipping is a separate legal requirement. Brisbane City Council says a seller must make sure a dog is microchipped before selling or giving it away, and a buyer of a puppy that is not microchipped must have it microchipped before it is 12 weeks old and tell the council who sold or gave them the dog.
If you move or your contact details change, update them with the council within 14 days. Keeping three or more dogs also needs a permit.
Every Queensland ad to sell or give away a dog born on or after 26 May 2017 must quote a supply number that identifies its breeder. We cover the rules in more detail on our Queensland puppies for sale page.
Puppies for sale in Brisbane: common questions
Can you find puppies for sale in Brisbane under $1,000?
It depends on the breed and the litter. Treat an unusually cheap listing for an in demand breed as a scam signal rather than a bargain.
Do I need to register my puppy in Brisbane?
Yes. Brisbane City Council requires every dog living in its area to be registered before it turns three months old, or within 14 days of moving to Brisbane. A registration lasts 12 months, fees are lower for desexed dogs, and pensioners get 50 per cent off. Have the puppy's microchip number ready when you register.
How do I avoid a puppy scam in Brisbane?
Insist on seeing the puppy and its mother in person or on a live video call before paying anything. Check the listing shows a supply number. Never pay a deposit by gift card, cryptocurrency or bank transfer to someone you have not spoken to.
Can I visit a Brisbane breeder before I buy?
You should. A breeder who will not let you visit, or who insists on meeting in a car park, is worth walking away from. Seeing where a litter is raised tells you more about the puppy's temperament and health than any photograph will.
