Norwich Terrier

By James C. • Updated

The Norwich Terrier is one of the smallest working terriers, a prick-eared ratting dog from East Anglia in England. It stands about 25 cm at the shoulder and weighs around 5 to 6 kg, with a hard, wiry, weatherproof coat in red, wheaten, black and tan or grizzle. It is curious, affectionate and sociable for a terrier, but keeps a strong prey drive and a tendency to dig. The drop-eared variety was separated in 1964 as the Norfolk Terrier. It is uncommon in Australia, and most buyers join a breeder waiting list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Norwich Terriers are affectionate, sturdy and playful, and most enjoy children who handle them gently. They need about 40 minutes of exercise a day, secure fencing and early training. They are not suitable for homes with pet rabbits, rodents or poultry because of their prey drive.
The ears. The Norwich has upright, pointed ears, while the Norfolk's ears fold forward. Both were once shown as one breed until the drop-eared dogs were separated as the Norfolk Terrier in 1964. Size, coat and temperament are very similar.
No official ranking exists, and every terrier is energetic by companion-dog standards. The Norwich is often described as one of the more sociable, less quarrelsome terriers, and the Border Terrier has a similar easy-going reputation. Individual temperament and daily exercise matter more than breed.
They can be vocal. Most bark to alert you to visitors and noises rather than constantly, but a bored or lonely Norwich may bark a lot. Daily exercise, mental games and early training to settle quietly help, which matters in units and strata.
Expect about $3,500 to $5,500 from a registered breeder. An NSW breeder has advertised puppies at $3,800, and US prices convert to about $5,250 to $6,000. Supply is limited, so most buyers join a waiting list rather than finding puppies immediately.
No. The Norwich is already one of the smallest terriers at around 5 to 6 kg, and there is no recognised teacup or miniature version. Puppies sold as teacup Norwich are likely undersized, mixed or misrepresented, and are a warning sign of a poor breeder or scam.
