Registering your puppy on the NSW Pet Registry

Every dog in NSW, Sydney included, must be registered on the NSW Pet Registry by 12 weeks of age or as soon as it changes owner, whichever happens first.

NSW registration is a lifetime registration. The fee for a dog is $84, or $37 for an eligible pensioner, and an additional payment applies at six months of age if the dog has not been desexed. A $25 late fee is added if registration is not paid within 28 days of when it was due.

You can pay online through a NSW Pet Registry account, signing in with MyServiceNSW and, if the puppy is not already listed, linking it by its microchip number. You can also register at your local council with a Change of owner form signed by the breeder or previous owner, a pet registration form and the fee. Until the fee is paid, the puppy is not registered and you may be fined.

Every NSW ad to sell or give away a puppy must include the puppy's microchip number and the breeder's identification number (BIN). We cover the rules in more detail on our NSW puppies for sale page.

Puppies for sale in Sydney: common questions

How much does a puppy cost in Sydney?

Most Sydney puppy listings sit between $2,000 and $3,550. Registration, desexing and vaccination are additional costs in the first year.

Can you find puppies for sale in Sydney under $1,000?

It depends on the breed and the litter. Treat an unusually cheap listing for an in demand breed as a scam signal rather than a bargain.

Do I need to register my puppy in Sydney?

Yes. Every dog in NSW must be registered on the NSW Pet Registry by 12 weeks of age or as soon as it changes owner, whichever happens first. It is a lifetime registration: $84 for a dog, or $37 for an eligible pensioner, with an additional payment at six months of age if the dog is not desexed, and a $25 late fee if it is not paid within 28 days.

Which puppy breeds are most listed in Sydney right now?

Right now the most listed breeds in Sydney are australian shepherds, cavoodles and german shepherds.

How do I avoid a puppy scam in Sydney?

Insist on seeing the puppy and its mother in person or on a live video call before paying anything. Check the listing shows a microchip number and a breeder identification number (BIN). Never pay a deposit by gift card, cryptocurrency or bank transfer to someone you have not spoken to.

Can I visit a Sydney breeder before I buy?

You should. A breeder who will not let you visit, or who insists on meeting in a car park, is worth walking away from. Seeing where a litter is raised tells you more about the puppy's temperament and health than any photograph will.
