Registering your puppy with your Melbourne council

Every dog in Victoria must be registered with its local council from three months of age, and Melbourne has more than thirty councils that each set their own fees.

Registration is renewed every year by 10 April. Your council sets the fee, and reduced fees apply to desexed dogs, to dogs over 10 years old, and to pensioners with an approved concession card.

Register with your local council, the one for the area where you live. If you later move to a new council area, transfer the registration. Your microchip registry details are a separate record, and you update those yourself.

Microchipping alone does not register a puppy. Yarra City Council, for example, asks for the puppy's microchip certificate, which comes from the breeder, shelter or vet, and a desexing certificate if one applies. Yarra runs its registration year from 10 April to 9 April the following year and sends renewal notices each March.

Every Victorian ad to sell, rehome or give away a dog must show the seller's source number and each dog's microchip number. We cover the rules in more detail on our Victoria puppies for sale page.

Puppies for sale in Melbourne: common questions

How much does a puppy cost in Melbourne?

Most Melbourne puppy listings sit between $1,750 and $3,050. Registration, desexing and vaccination are additional costs in the first year.

Can you find puppies for sale in Melbourne under $1,000?

It depends on the breed and the litter. Treat an unusually cheap listing for an in demand breed as a scam signal rather than a bargain.

Do I need to register my puppy with my Melbourne council?

Yes. Dogs must be registered with the local council from three months of age. Registration is renewed every year by 10 April, and fees are set by each council and are reduced for desexed dogs. Register with the council for the area where you live, and transfer the registration if you move to a new council area.

Which puppy breeds are most listed in Melbourne right now?

Right now the most listed breeds in Melbourne are cavalier king charles spaniels, cavoodles and dachshunds.

How do I avoid a puppy scam in Melbourne?

Insist on seeing the puppy and its mother in person or on a live video call before paying anything. Check the listing shows a microchip number and a source number. Never pay a deposit by gift card, cryptocurrency or bank transfer to someone you have not spoken to.

Can I visit a Melbourne breeder before I buy?

You should. A breeder who will not let you visit, or who insists on meeting in a car park, is worth walking away from. Seeing where a litter is raised tells you more about the puppy's temperament and health than any photograph will.
